Judicial Affairs welcomes two new staff members

Judicial Affairs, the university body that handles all forms of student misconduct, has two new staff members for the 2008-2009 school year: Assistant Director Brian Glick and Mediation Coordinator Janice Driggers.

As assistant director, Glick’s main responsibility is to oversee the recently-created all-Greek judicial board. Glick said the Greek system has its own judicial system modeled after the university’s. Each of the four Greek councils has its own judicial board, with representatives from each fraternity chapter. Above that is the all-Greek board, whose members are justices from the four council boards.

“Our system is very fair,” Glick said, adding that one of his goals is to maintain that same level of fairness. He also said Judicial Affairs allows students to hold others accountable for their actions.

“Members of the NIU Greek community have the same ability to hold their peers accountable for actions,” Glick said.

Driggers said her main responsibility is to facilitate mediation sessions between students and other individuals. These sessions can include problems with roommates, significant others or non-students.

She described the mediation session as “win-win” for the students.

“The students decide what they want to be solved,” Driggers said. “It really puts them in control of the outcome.”

Driggers said the communication and cooperation that comes with mediation appeals to her. She also admires its speed when compared to litigation.

“People can arrive at a solution much more quickly through mediation and then start to move forward from there,” Driggers said.

Driggers said she hopes to make students more aware of mediation. She said she is currently working on developing outreach programs with Health Enhancement, the Women’s Resource Center and the Latin Resource Center.

Glick previously served as a residence life coordinator at Elmhurst College and as a hall director at Southeast Missouri State University.

Driggers is attending NIU’s College of Law. She is studying international entertainment and intellectual property law.
