PRISM to hold annual ‘Welcome Back Dance’
PRISM will hold its “Welcome Back Dance for LGBT students and allies” at 9:30 p.m. Friday at Eduardo’s Flamingo Lounge, 214 E. Lincoln Highway (at Second Street and Lincoln Highway). Admission is $5. For information, call the PRISM office at 753-0584.
OLAS offers free bowling night for group members
OLAS, the Organization for Latin American Students, will hold a free bowling night for members at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Holmes Student Center’s Huskie Den. Admission is free; early arrival is recommended. For information, call Nelida Rodriguez at 375-0551.
CAB Concerts looking for students to staff committee
Campus Activities Board’s Concert’s Committee currently is accepting applications for committee positions. The group works to bring musical artists to perform on campus. Applications may be picked up at the CAB office at the Campus Life Building, Suite 160. Applications are due by Friday, Sept. 6. For information, call concerts coordinator John Ugolini at 753-1580.
Local congregation offers Rosh Hashana services
Services for Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, will be offered by Congregation Beth Shalom in DeKalb, which serves both DeKalb and Kane counties.
The services, which are open to everyone, will be led by Rabbi Maralee Gordon and Cantor David Gordon (no relation). The services are co-sponsored by the synagogue and Hillel, the Jewish student organization at NIU.
Services will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at the Congregation, 820 Russell Road, and will include music by the congregation’s choir, directed by Harvey Blau. Children are welcome.
Rosh Hashana services will continue at 9 a.m. on both Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8. The Kol Nidre service, which begins Yom Kippur, will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.
Yom Kippur services on Monday, Sept. 16, begin at 9 a.m.. The Yizkor memorial service also will begin around 11:15 a.m. Services will conclude from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, ending with the final shofar blast and havdalah.
For the High Holy Days only, services will be at the Holmes Student Center. Parking is available after 7 p.m. without charge at NIU’s visitor’s lot on Carroll Avenue, in any campus parking lot and in the ramp on Carroll. There is a charge for weekday daytime parking in the lot.

CHADD to hold open meeting about support
CHADD, Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, will hold a meeting at from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at the DeKalb Public Library’s Conference Room. The topic will be support group/open discussion. CHADD is a nationwide, non-profit, consumer-based organization working for families and individuals with AD/HD. NIU to offer sport skills program for children 6-10
A sport skills program for young children will be offered at NIU from Sept. 16 to Nov. 20. The program will provide opportunities for children to experience the fun of movement, develop fundamental sport skills, and learn about fitness and health through various activities. Luis Garcia, a specialist in the field of motor development and pedagogy, will direct the program.
The class will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at Anderson Hall, Gym 100. It is for children 6 to 10 years old. A fee of $100 per term will be assessed, along with an optional $5 temporary parking permit. Enrollment will be on a first come, first served basis.
