Jecklin wins Sportsmanship Award in MAC Tourney, Huskies finish last

For the second straight year, someone from the NIU men’s golf team won an award at the MAC Tournament.

Zach Jecklin won the Sportsmanship Award for the MAC Conference.

Jecklin also finished seventh out of 45 golfers, shooting four over par at 292 for the tournament.

NIU golf coach John Cleary credits experience for Jecklin’s finish.

“Zach has played in a lot of tournaments,” Cleary said. “He knows how to manage his game.”

However, Jecklin’s performance was not enough to help the golf team win.

NIU was in fifth place after two rounds of play, but the Huskies finished last.

Former MAC Freshman of the Year Andrew Frame didn’t improve on his seventh-place finish from last year. The sophomore finished 18th, shooting 12 over par for the tournament.

The bottom two scorers for NIU finished 43rd and 44th.

“We just struggled at the bottom of the lineup,” Cleary said.

Host school Eastern Michigan University won the tournament, scoring an even par on Sunday to edge Kent State by one stroke.

Ciaran McAleavey of the University of Toledo won the tournament, shooting two under par.
