2008 Tugs competition opens Monday
April 22, 2008
The first day of the 2008 Tugs competition is in the books, with three tugs taking place on Monday, the warmest day of the year so far.
In the day’s first action, the team of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) and Alpha Kappa Lambda (AKL) beat Sigma Nu near the West Lagoon by Stevenson and Grant towers.
SAE/AKL advance to the second round, where they will face the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, Pi Kappa Alpha (Pikes) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) defeated Sigma Pi in Monday’s second game. TKE will face Phi Sigma Kappa (Phi Sigs), who beat the team of Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Psi in Monday’s final match-up, in a second round tug at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Tugs allowed non-fraternity teams to compete in this year’s event, although none appears in this year’s bracket.
Anyone can come out and watch the events Wednesday, beginning with the first tug at 3 p.m. Admission on Wednesday is $6, with all proceeds going to the NIU Feb. 14 Scholarship Fund. Saturday’s matches, which will determine the first, third and fifth place winners, begin at 3 p.m.
Admission for Saturday’s matches is $10.
