Behm grand slam is centerpiece of memorable day

If there was a fantasy baseball league for the MAC, most players would have loved to have Justin Behm on their team Sunday.
Behm tied an NIU school record with eight RBIs in the Huskies’ 14-11 victory over Akron in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader. The catcher went 3-for-5 with two home runs, including a grand slam.
“I really don’t know what to say,” Behm said. “Sometimes you just have those days.”
The Huskies trailed 11-9 going into the seventh inning, but a Jeff Thomas RBI single and the Behm grand slam put them ahead for good.
“It was big; it’s always big when you can pick up your team like that,” Behm said. “I was able to get something elevated and put it in the smallest part of the park.”
Behm has fared a lot better in MAC competition this season, with 20 of his 25 RBIs coming in conference play.
The junior’s .386 MAC batting average is 66 points higher than his overall average.
Behm also posts an impressive 1.358 OPS (on-base plus slugging) in MAC play. By comparison, the major league single-season record for OPS is 1.422, set by Barry Bonds in 2004.
“Justin’s been doing a great job,” NIU head coach Ed Mathey said. “His approach at the plate has been outstanding; he’s seeing the ball real well.”
With the temperature around 30 degrees Sunday, most players wore long sleeves under their jerseys. However, Behm and shortstop Bobby Stevens decided to brave the cold and go without them.
“It’s just our thing, me and Bob, any chance we can, we don’t like the sleeves,” Behm said. “It’s just personal preference.”
