NPHC not hurt by offensive pamphlets placed around campus

On March 24, pamphlets marked “Greek Superlatives” were placed in popular campus destinations, bestowing less than prestigious awards to their recipients.

The pamphlets singled out individuals as well as Greek organizations within the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and were distributed anonymously in the Holmes Student Center, computer labs across campus and other locations.

Some of the “awards” included on the pamphlets were “Most Annoying/nosy,” “When are you coming out of the closet?,” “Most Arrogant” and “Most Anticipated Neos.”

There were at least 25 awards named, but not all were negative.

Rashidat Olayiwola, a senior corporate communications major and president of the NPHC at NIU, found the pamphlets offensive.

“It is slander against individuals,” Olayiwola said.

The NPHC oversees eight black fraternities and sororities on campus. In addition, the NPHC also develops food drives, mentor programs for students and community service events.

Olayiwola said the NPHC was not hurt by the pamphlets.

“Whoever wrote this was trying to damage our image and it didn’t,” Olayiwola said. “You are always going to have those people that try to tear you down.”

Melissa Williams, assistant director of Student Involvement and Leadership Development, said NPHC has contributed greatly to the community.

“I truly believe the NPHC is a value-based organization,” Williams said. “They have a long history of giving back to the NIU community.”

John Jones, associate vice president for Student Affairs, said the origin of the pamphlets will be investigated.

“We find the handout inappropriate and offensive in nature,” Jones said. “We will work with NPHC and other campus leaders to address this issue immediately.”
