Naperville campus to hold public forum on gun violence
April 11, 2008
A public forum on gun violence will be Monday at the NIU-Naperville Campus.
The 7 p.m. forum will be hosted by the Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, headed by Stephen Young. Young lost his son 11 years ago to an illegally obtained gun and encourages NIU students to attend the forum.
Speaking at the forum will be Garrett Evans, a Chicago native and Virginia Tech shooting survior.
The forum will open with public discussion and explain how citizens can impact the issue by talking to legislators.
The campaign is also pushing for support of two currently debated state gun bills: Senate Bill 1007, which bans high-capacity ammunition magazines and House Bill 758, which requires universal background checks on all gun sales and exchanges.
“We are pushing these because they have the best chance to pass into law this year,” Young said. Along with NIU students, Young also said local law enforcement, clergy and Illinois legislators have been invited to the forum.
The NIU-Naperville campus is located at 1120 E. Diehl Road. The forum will take place in Conference Room 101C. For more information about the Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, visit www.icpgv.org.
