Deadline set for memorial suggestions

The NIU Memorial Committee has set a deadline of April 29 for submissions and ideas on what to do to memorialize the victims of the Feb. 14 shootings. Suggestions must be sent via e-mail to [email protected]. Michael Malone, vice president for university advancement, said the committee has received some suggestions thus far including a garden, fountain display and works of art, according to the press release.

New OneCards available

Eligible faculty and staff now can obtain their new NIU OneCards. To get the new IDs, faculty and staff members should bring their current ID cards to the OneCard office in the Holmes Student Center between 8:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 815-753-9569.

Educator to speak on earthworms, vermicomposting

Today at 7 p.m. , Peggy Doty, natural resources educator, will hold a special demonstration on vermicomposting at the Sycamore Public Library, 103 E State St., in the Big Meeting Room.

“Vermicompost is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by some species of earthworms” and it is used for natural fertilizer and soil conditioner, according to the library’s Web site. The program is open to all ages.

Nobel winner to speak on black holes

A Nobel Prize winner will deliver a lecture on campus today in the Altgeld Hall Auditorium. Gerald ‘t Hooft, professor of theoretical physics at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, will give the speech titled “Black Holes in Particle Physics” at 3:30 p.m. ‘t Hooft was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in physics.

Ellington’s will serve Brazilian cuisine

Ellington’s, the student-run restaurant in the Holmes Student Center, will feature a meal titled Passaporte a Brazil today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It will feature Brazilian parmesan-filled cheese puffs or mango jicama chopped salad for starters, Brazilian churrasco beef skewers or Brazilian churrasco vegetable skewers for entrees and coconut bread pudding with dried apricots or Brazilian coffee banana surprise for dessert. Each table also will be served a guacho bean dip with tri-colored tortilla chips.

Event to discuss stereotypes

“Free The Mind,” an event focused on discussing stereotypes in the black community, will take place tonight at 7 p.m. in the Stevenson Multi-Purpose room.
