It was a bittersweet opening weekend for the NIU softball team.

The Huskies started their season with a road trip to the Florida Gulf Coast University Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Huskies won their first four games of the tournament, but ended their stay with two losses.

NIU (4-2) opened its season on Friday with a 4-2 victory over Mercer (8-6). The Huskies continued to find success as they beat host Florida Gulf Coast (20-6) 3-2 in eight innings.

Offensive consistency was apparent for NIU throughout the tournament. The Huskies scored four runs in wins against Saint Francis (Pa.) and Mount Saint Mary’s.

However, NIU wasn’t able to carry the offensive consistency from the first two days of the tournament into the final day.

Facing host FGCU again the, Huskies were shutout 5-0. NIU then lost 4-3 to Mercer in extra innings.

NIU sophomore pitcher Kate Greenough took the loss against FGCU, but won two games prior during the tournament.
