Emergency services respond to small fire in Grant

By JAMES TSCHIRHART

A slight electrical fire occurred in the basement of Grant Towers on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency vehicles filled the parking area outside of the Grant South entrance after they received a phone call reporting there had been smoke coming from the basement of Tower A. No injuries were reported.

Natalie Calcitrai, junior special education major, was working at the front desk in Grant South at the time of the incident. She said there was no fire, but there was some smoke. The alarm never sounded, she said.

As the situation’s status was downgraded, ambulances and fire trucks left, leaving it to NIU’s maintenance staff of electricians.

Three electricians investigated the malfunction and reported that the old wiring in a control transformer had burned out. They said the problem is minor and will not affect the building’s operations.
