Five minutes with baseball’s Joe Etcheverry

By JON LEVANICH

When a person thinks of a place to go to college, California comes to mind for many.

But if someone says they are coming from California to DeKalb for school, many would quickly turn their heads in surprise.

The Northern Star caught up with NIU freshman first baseman Joe Etcheverry to talk about his home in California, his role model and the NCAA basketball tournament.

Northern Star: You’re from California. Why did you decide to come to NIU to play baseball?

Joe Etcheverry: It was weird. Coach [Ed] Mathey’s brother lives in California, and he talked to Coach about me, saying they were looking for a first baseman.

I came for a visit and before I left, they offered me a scholarship. I felt that it was the right choice for me educational-wise and athletically.

NS: How do you like DeKalb and NIU so far?

JE: It’s a small town, and it’s completely different. I’ve never experienced snow. This winter was really cold, but it was still fun for me.

NS: What do you miss most about California?

JE: I miss the sun every day. There was never the question if you were going to get your games in that day.

Back home, you knew you were going to play every day because the weather would let you play. I think I miss the weather most of all.

NS: What expectations do you have for yourself and your team this season?

JE: For myself, when I get in I want to succeed when I get my chances.

For the team, our record doesn’t show it but we have a good team. I think we have a team that can win the MAC championship.

NS: Your father played Division-II baseball. How much of a role model was he for you?

JE: Growing up, my dad went to every game. He didn’t say much there, but when I got home, I got an ear full.

He’d grab a bat and we’d go into the backyard and he’d show me what was wrong with my swing. He was always trying to make me better because he knew what I wanted. He did his best to try and fulfill my dream.

NS: Do you plan on watching the NCAA basketball tournament?

JE: Oh I do.

NS: Who do you think is going to win?

JE: I really want Duke to win, but I have to go with UCLA.

NS: You said you wanted Duke to win but you’re from the West Coast. No love for the West Coast teams?

JE: Oh no, there’s nothing against them. I have just always been a Duke fan.
