Rec offers one-on-one training, yoga sessions

Recreation Services is offering one-on-one yoga and personal training sessions to aid students and members in reaching their personal fitness goals.

In one-on-one personal training and yoga, an individual can receive personal fitness instruction and yoga instruction, said Becky Lewis, assistant director of Recreation Services. Sessions are tailored to the individual’s needs and goals, she said.

One-on-one sessions are private and last about an hour each. Sessions are offered at the Campus Recreation Center. Various parts of the facility are used, such as the cardiovascular and strength training rooms and track, depending on the client’s program.

One-on-one yoga sessions are held in the Massage Therapy Room.

“Sessions are great for those who want to get in shape and improve their health, but need some assistance in doing so,” Lewis said. “Some people are looking for individualized instruction to help get them started, some want a motivator, some people already exercise [or] practice yoga and just want [to take] their personal program or routine to the next level.”

Both personal training and one-on-one yoga sessions include hands-on instruction, goal-setting, motivation, evaluation and assessment, she said. There is no registration deadline for sessions, and a variety of packages are available.

Personal training has been offered by the Rec center since 1996, and one-on-one yoga is new this year, Lewis said.

Kevin Wenberg, a graduate assistant and fitness and wellness major, said he has been a personal trainer for four years. Wenberg has worked with over 150 individuals for personal training and has instructed group sessions with as many as 130 people.

He said the routine is designed around the client’s goals, preferences and physical abilities or limitations.

Wenberg said even people who do not think they need personal training will most likely benefit from meeting with a trainer at least once.

The Rec center offers a “Jumpstart Package” which includes a fitness consultation, fitness assessment, program design and two personal training sessions with a certified personal trainer. The package also includes a consultation with a registered dietician.

“The main idea [is] to push them past the point where they would normally quit without putting them at any risk of injury,” Wenberg said. “Injury and disease prevention [and] rehab are my main goals with each client through education, demonstration and application.”
