Huskies hope to squeeze in doubleheader with Valparaiso

By NORTHERN STAR STAFF

It’s been 10 days since the NIU softball team was last in action.

But the Huskies (5-9) are hoping the rain will hold off so it can squeeze in a doubleheader against Valparaiso University today. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m., with the second start time at 5 p.m.

NIU’s last four games against the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University were canceled due to bad weather.

Valparaiso has also dealt with weather. The Crusaders (12-6) were forced to cancel a weekend series against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Valparaiso has five players batting above .300, with Whitney Warner leading the group. The sophomore is hitting .373 with two home runs and ten RBIs.

The Crusaders also have three pitchers with ERAs below 2.30. Pitcher Andrea Zappia is leading the group giving up 11 runs in 56.2 innings. The senior has thrown six complete games, including three shutouts.
