Job fair has good turnout despite economic slowdown

With the economy in a slowdown and fewer jobs on the market, some students at NIU’s job fair Wednesday were worried about finding a job.

“I’m a little worried,” said corporate communication major Bo Akande. “But if you look hard you can always find a job.”

Akande said he has heard the U.S. economy may be in recession but hasn’t looked into it very much yet.

Employers at the job fair had mixed reactions to the economy’s effect on their company.

Ken Brown, operations manager for Kohl’s Department Stores, said they will purposely not fill a spot because of the shape of the economy.

“I think we look more closely if we have to fill a spot,” Brown said. “We’re just more cautious as far as that goes and overall expense.”

With some companies not offering jobs, others are still finding success and new positions, despite the economic slowdown.

“If anything, it’s allowing us to free new positions,” said Lori McGrath of DuPage Credit Union. “We’re a thriving company so we’re doing well.”

Mary Myers, associate director of campus and employer relations, said employers are still looking for college students to fill jobs. She said 235 employers and over 600 recruiters were present at the job fair.

“I am really pleased with the turn out,” Myers said. “I think it speaks to the quality and caliber of the students and their education.”
