Murer releases statement on task force

NIU Board of Trustees Chair Cherilyn Murer hopes to form a task force to review the NIU response to the Feb. 14 shootings, according to a statement released Tuesday.

As reported by the Northern Star on Monday, Murer said that such a task force would provide a way for other universities and institutes to react and respond to emergencies.

“We are obligated to share, as Virginia Tech and other universities have shared, the lessons learned in managing a large-scale crisis. Such lessons helped NIU to further refine its emergency response plans to better prepare for a crisis of the magnitude we experienced on Feb. 14, 2008,” Murer said. “And now it’s NIU’s turn to share what we have learned so that others may benefit in the same way.”

Murer praised the university’s emergency response during and after the tragedy, describing the efforts of NIU in working with students, faculty and staff as “necessary, critical and well-managed.”
