Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital released updates at a press conference Friday on the three shooting victims taken to the hospital after Thursday’s shooting.

Unnum Rahman, sophomore business major from Plainfield, was upgraded from serious condition to fair, said her father, Wassif Rahman.

After two-and-a-half to three hours in surgery, the 19-year-old’s condition improved, said Dr. Michael Iwanicki, medical director of Trauma Services and chairman of the hospital’s surgery department. Unnum suffered soft tissue injuries to both extremities as well as her eye, he added.

Wassif Rahman said the swelling was subsiding in his daughter’s eye. Unnum was in recovery until 5 a.m. Friday.

“She’s upbeat and talking, and her friends and family are around her,” Wassif said. He described his daughter as a friendly person who helps everyone around her.

Iwanicki spoke about the condition of the other two victimes taken to Good Samaritan.

Pre-sociology major Maria Ruiz Santana, 20, remains in critical condition with shotgun blasts to the head, neck and chest.

The third victim, an unidentified male in his 20s, suffered a single gunshot wound to the left shoulder, Iwanicki said. The bullet penetrated his lung and came to rest in his lower abdomen.

The hospital upgraded him from critical to serious condition.

Iwanicki said the victims were brought to Good Samaritan because Kishwaukee Community Hospital is not set up for serious trauma.

Rahman and Santana were airlifted to Good Samaritan from Kish; the third victim was transported by ambulance.

Wassif Rahman, who spoke at the press conference, said he didn’t blame NIU for what happened.

A special prayer session with the families was held at the hospital with the staff chaplain Anna Lee Hisey-Pierson.
