After completion, Northern View concerns quieted
January 17, 2008
The voices of Northern View Community residents were heard by the university.
The flooding in late August resulted in what was supposed to be the first weekend of residence at NVC to an evacuation, according to an Aug. 27, 2007 Northern Star article.
NVC’s rocky start lead many residents to believe the housing facility was not as accepting to students with dependents as they thought it would be.
“A number of meetings with NVC residents were held last semester in an attempt to truly understand the concerns of those residents,” said Kelly Wesener, executive director of Housing & Dining.
“Initially, those concerns were over construction time lines, which now have been completed. Other concerns, such as the bus route, have been addressed as best we can.”
Roxanne Wilson, a geography graduate student whose letter concerning security issues at NVC was published in the Nov. 30, 2007 edition of the Northern Star, said the complex committee at NVC held a meeting to address concerns.
The letter addressed concerns of security issues due to a lack of transportation service to NVC, Wilson said. Her concerns also related to a lack of transportation service when the Convocation Center hosted events, she said.
After the article ran, existing transportation schedules for busses heading to NVC were altered during events at the Convo and NVC received its own shuttle service, Wilson said.
“Once residents have the opportunity to use the new bus routes this semester, we will be looking for feedback as to the impact of the changes,” Wesener said. “We are optimistic that the changes in the routes have made strides toward meeting the needs of the NVC residents.”
Additionally, the road between the Convo and NVC now has lighting, which was put in to alleviate concerns brought to the university’s attention, Wesener said.
“The school has been really good with addressing issues concerning NVC,” Wilson said.
In the fall, residents raised concerns over the continuing construction of NVC after the facilities were inhabited.
Construction on the facilities continued through the semester and neared completion in late Sept., according to Northern Star on Sept. 20.
Construction on NVC is complete and maintenance is currently concerned with the occasional issues that come with any new building, Wesener said.
“I plan to personally spend time in the community throughout the next semester, interacting with residents in an effort to understand any concerns they might have and work toward resolving those issues,” Wesener said.
