Leaking fan units in HSC get renovation
January 30, 2008
The Holmes Student Center’s 15th floor is currently undergoing renovation.
The main reason for the renovation is the aging fan coil units, which control the temperature on the floors.
“The old units were past their useful life,” said HSC director Mitch Kielb. “They constantly broke down and caused damage to the building due to leaking.”
Many leaks ruined sections of the roof. Major portions have been fixed, but there are still a few sections awaiting repair.
“Much work has been done to replace heating and air conditioning units in the tower,” Kielb said.
The new temperature system will control heating and cooling centrally, instead of from within each room.
Remodeling projects to improve the building have been ongoing since 2002, with six floors updated so far. For 2008, the focus is on updating the 15th floor, which includes replacement of the University Suite that was previously used for special guests and will now serve as a room for major meetings.
“As we fixed the infrastructure, we have also updated the decor to improve the general appearance and usability of the building,” Kielb said.
