Greeks look for spring recruits

By JOHN BACHMANN

Fraternities and sororities recruit not only in the fall but also in the spring.

Josh Boldt, Interfraternity Council (IFC) vice president of recruitment, says students aren’t as aware of recruitment in the spring due to the low numbers of people who are recruited compared to the fall.

“Numbers are traditionally lower in the spring, but we hope to increase those soon,” Boldt said.

Boldt plans on using different approaches to increase the number of members.

“We are using better recruitment and motivation methods,” he said.

Omega Delta President Lincoln DePaula also says students tend to want to join the organizations in the fall.

“Most of the freshman that [plan to join] do so in the fall. The ones that tend to [join] in the spring are those who want to keep up with their grades in the first semester,” he said.

Being in a fraternity can take up students’ time, DePaula said.

“It can be a burden by having to remember a lot of information while they’re [in the process of joining],” he said. “It’s almost like being in another class.”

The IFC is having a “Meet the Greeks” night to from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Lincoln Hall Commons.

Students will have the opportunity to meet with different organizations. Free pizza and refreshments will be provided. On Feb. 9, there will be a Greek Expo in the Holmes Student Center Regency Room from 1 to 5 p.m.

The benefits of joining a fraternity or a sorority are vast, Boldt said.

“These organizations enhance and teach leadership skills,” Boldt said. “They also get students involved with the campus by participating in several charity organizations.”
