An Album You Should Know: GZA – “Liquid Swords”
Within hip-hop exists a unique universe that blends the artistic mediums of emceeing, martial arts, comic book culture and the urban experience.
This universe is Wu-Tang – referring to the phenomenal brand of hip-hop made popular by the almighty Wu-Tang Clan, a unit of nine New York emcees that remains a favorite among the masses of legit hip-hop fans.
Breaking onto the scene in the early 1990s, the debut album (“Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers”) and sophomore album (“Wu-Tang Forever”) have etched out their own places in hip-hop among an assembly of supreme compilations worthy enough of being deemed classic.
The album “Liquid Swords,” a solo endeavor starring the co-founder of Wu-Tang, GZA (aka “The Genius”), is a definitive and timeless piece that faithfully exhibits the artistry and innovation that the Wu has so skillfully mastered in the music world.
GZA’s intellect is the star of the show, showcasing his love for street knowledge, chess, mathematics and the principles of intellect.
On the track “Labels,” in which he uses his skills to characterize the actual names of record labels, GZA rhymes, “The capital of this rugged slang is Wu-Tang/Witty Unpredictable Talent And Natural Game.”
All eight of the other Wu members make appearances as well, providing the best supporting cast any emcee could hope for. Though they are no stranger to irregularity, the exceptional ingenuity of “Liquid Swords” allows for more creative freedom with lyrics.
In that sense, “Liquid Swords” is immortal. It reaches out to such a diverse range of individuals and is an unforgettable, extraordinary experience that sticks with the listener for life.
From admirers of kung-fu films, to fans of Marvel comics, to people who just dig rare sounds and gifted lyricism, there is something special on this album for everyone.
