Orientation leaders guide the way
November 7, 2007
NIU First-Year Experience and Orientation is looking for orientation leaders for the summer.
Erica Hochleutner, student orientation coordinator, said the orientation office is seeking individuals to welcome new students and parents to NIU, lead discussion groups, assist in orientation preparation, explain academic opportunities, procedures and registration process and positively represent NIU to students, families and guests.
Orientation leaders are expected to attend training sessions every Wednesday in February from 3:15 to 5:45 p.m. Hochleutner said there will also be summer training sessions that run from the end of May to early June. Leaders will also have to attend all orientation programs in June, two weeks in July and in early August.
Hochleutner said leaders receive a salary of $2,750, as well as optional housing during the summer training and orientation programs.
Kevin Coffee, student orientation coordinator, has been through the experience before.
“For our tour training, our student coordinator would take us around campus and rotate who gave the tour, and we would give the tour with our knowledge of campus,” Coffee said.
Coffee said the meetings will go through the responsibilities and roles of an orientation leader, while also covering qualities of a leader, time commitments, perks and benefits and spring and summer training. Coffee said they will also discuss applications and selection, and will open up a panel of past orientation leaders to answer questions.
