With two video games dueling over students’ desire to rock out, student opinion appears to be split.

Many students are contemplating whether to invest their funds in “Guitar Hero III,” available on XBox 360, Playstation 3, Playstation 2 and Wii, or in “Rock Band,” available all of those systems, except for Wii.

“Guitar Hero III” is a game where players choose a song to play and strum on a guitar-shaped controller in time with the notes playing across the screen.

“Rock Band” is similar in objective, with a guitar and bass guitar, but the game also introduces a drum kit and microphone to create a four-player party game where participants must sing the correct lyrics and drum to the beat of the song.

“I’d say that I like ‘Rock Band’ just a little bit more because you can play all the different instruments,” said freshman Spanish and literature major Joe Tedeschi.

Tedeschi said he has played both games and thinks “Rock Band” provides a better gaming experience for a group of players, but “Guitar Hero III” is more practical for college students.

“If you have the money, ‘Rock Band’ is definitely the game to get, but if you’re an average college student, ‘Guitar Hero III’ is the better bet and is still a lot of fun,” Tedeschi said.

Sophomore accountancy major Edward Bandemer thinks “Guitar Hero III” requires more skill to compete on the expert level.

“‘Rock Band’ can be an extremely fun game to play, but I feel there is so much pride to beat ‘Guitar Hero III’ by yourself,” Bandemer said.
