Receiving a college degree isn’t always enough when it comes to getting a job, according to Campus Career Services.

Many students looking for a job can benefit tremendously from an internship, said Career Services intern Lauren Bearden.

“Having an internship is great to have on a resume and makes you a better-qualified candidate down the road,” Bearden said.

Career Services offers various resources for students seeking internships. Through its Web site, students can access the Victor eRecruiting service used to create resumes and find potential employers and internship opportunities for students in their chosen field.

Another opportunity offered by Career Services are semester internship fairs that provide students a chance to meet face to face with representatives from various companies.

Bearden finds that internships are also a great way to figure out if the career you are considering is right for you before you head out into in the real world.

“You can receive a lot of benefits and will be able to confirm your career choice from the experience,” Bearden said. “If you find the internship is not to your liking, you will be able to decide if the major you have is absolutely right for you.”

Applying early for an internship is advisable.

“A good time to apply is when you’re a sophomore,” Bearden said. “The sooner the better because it’s a great way to get your foot in the door.”
