NIU students are now able to track the whereabouts of buses in the Huskie Bus Line online and on one of three 50-inch monitors on campus. Huskie tracks can be accessed online at http://huskietracks.niu.edu.

All of the Huskie Buses are equpieed with transponders that emit signals to the tracking system every 30 seconds. The Huskie Tracks Web site updates every 15 seconds.

Students can find two of the 50-inch monitors to track buses in the Holmes Student Center and a third monitor is located at DuSable Hall.

Bus troutes serve the main NIU campus, including classroom buildings, parking lots, offices and residence halls as well as routes heading off campus to local apartment buildings, shopping centers and restaurants.

The NIU Student Association manages the Huskie Bus Line, owned by Veolia Transportation. The S.A. spent $19,500 on the system.

Phil Young, a research scientist in the the Department of Geography’s Advanced Geospatial Laboratory worked with the S.A. and Huskie Bus Line in the launch of Huskie Tracks.

Young said the goal is to eventually install tracking monitors at other locations on campus and expand the system to include Late Night Ride services and FreedomMobile, a service for persons with disabilities.
