University Police release reports as a result of FOIA request
October 24, 2007
Editor’s note: The following is a direct excerpt from a Freedom of Information Act request obtained by the Northern Star from the University Police department. It has not been edited and acknowledges information that has been redacted from the report for public release.
The purpose of publishing these police reports is to inform the public not only of the exact nature of certain crimes occurring on campus, but also of the exact manner in which the UP and its officers record reported crimes that occur within the UP’s jurisdiction. Because the Northern Star has been told by the UP that it will not comment on reported crimes and that police reports can only be obtained through FOIA requests, this is the way the Star can presently provide crime information to the public.

Offense: Battery
Location: Grant South
Reported: Sept. 19, 2007 at 6:10 p.m.

[Name redacted] said Matt hit her with the book about 15 to 20 minutes before I arrived at GTS. I told [redacted] that I had been in the lobby of GTS for a while and I did not see anything. [Redacted] then told me that the Battery must have happened earlier. I asked [redacted] what side of the face Matt hit her on. [Redacted] told me that she was hit on the left side of her face. I checked [redacted]’s face for mark or signs of injury but did not find any. [Redacted] told me that Matt was about 6’2″, wearing plaid shorts, a white t-shirt and red hat. [Redacted] said that the two of them were playing around and joking until she pushed Matt’s hand from in front of her. [Redacted] has a friend who knows Matt but does not want that person to be involved in the reporting of the Battery.
Recorded by Officer Richard A. Scott Sept. 28
On Tuesday, Sept. 25th, I viewed video footage from the surveillance cameras of GTS. The footage I viewed was for Wednesday, Sept. 19th, starting at 1600 hours. I was able to find video of Smith on the B Lobby Camera footage starting at 1600 hours. At 1647 hours [redacted] is sitting on a couch with a woman and four men while another man with a hat, white shirt and plaid shorts walks in front of the couch speaking with the people on the couch. At 1648 hours [redacted] gets up from the couch and walks with the person wearing the plaid shorts towards B-tower of GTS and out of camera view. They return less than a minute later and [redacted] sits back on the couch. At 1653 hours the person with plaid shorts is on his cell phone. At 1655 hours the person in plaid shorts is standing in front of [redacted], does something and then [redacted] begins chasing him towards B-tower of GTS. [Redacted] then leaves and walks by the main desk of GTS at 1656 hours.
