InterVarsity raises funds for Homeless Children International with 5K run
October 15, 2007
InterVarsity Christian Fellowship hosted a race to raise money for impoverished children Saturday.
The Ditch-Witch 5K Run for Kenya took place at 8 a.m. Saturday at Hopkins Park. Profits were donated to Homeless Children International in an effort to help Kenyan children attend schools. The race, focused on the global crisis of HIV/AIDS, raised $2,000.
“The money raised is to help to continue aid for the kids to be taken care of,” said Casey Beckley, race organizer and campus staff worker for InterVarsity. “We wanted to do something to tell [the children’s] stories. We need a voice for people that don’t have a voice.”
Ten NIU students traveled to Kenya over the summer through InterVarsity and visited impoverished areas of Kenya, working with small children.
Chris Brundies of Sycamore, participated both for enjoyment and to help a good cause.
“I enjoy running,” Brundies said. “[I’m running] for the runner’s high that comes with running and for a good cause for Kenya.”
Runners and walkers from around the DeKalb and Sycamore participated.
