Joseph Lee approved to SA

The Student Association approved the appointment of Joseph Lee to a senate position Sunday night.

Lee, a junior journalism major, touted his experience with public transportation in DeKalb, and said he would be an excellent addition to the mass transit committee.

“I think there should be more busses running because, from experience, if there are more busses late, you might be waiting 40 minutes to get down the street,” Lee said. “Also, if it’s cold outside, nobody wants to sit out and wait for the bus to come.”

Lee’s desire to listen to student’s complaints played a part in his decision to pursue a senate position, he said.

“I see a lot of people going home on the weekends. I hear people complain about certain things that happen at NIU, like the treatment of students at NIU,” Lee said. “Just being an example to those that follow in my footsteps, I think I can make a change, or try to make a change.”

There was strong support for Lee’s confirmation. Several senators endorsed his confirmation, expressing confidence in his ideas and passion.

A number of senators, however, voted against Lee’s appointment, including Sen. Aaron Funfsinn, who disapproved of Lee’s notion that his experience would get him on the mass transit committee.

“I have a hard time appointing someone that has an interest getting on that one committee,” Funfsinn said.

Although four student organizations were recognized at Sunday night’s meeting, the club that caused the most contention was Chang’s Hapkido Club, a martial arts organization. The club requires members to pay a $60 monthly fee, plus an additional $50 for uniforms.

Sen. Cameron Harmon opposed the organization’s recognition, saying there are already numerous organizations like it on campus and recognizing it would decrease the amount of space available to clubs on campus. The group ultimately was recognized by the SA, with five senators opposed.

Other groups recognized were the NIU Medieval Society, Democracy Matters and the Political Science Graduate Student Association.
