RIAA sends 25 more pre-litigation letters to NIU students

By NORTHERN STAR STAFF

Twenty-five NIU students on Thursday received pre-litigation settlement letters from the Recording Industry Association of America.

According to an RIAA press release, the letters give the recipient the chance to resolve copyright infringement claims against them at a reduced cost before a formal suit is filed.

Each letter warns the school of a possible copyright infringement suit against one of its students or employees. Schools are asked to forward the letter to the student or employee.

Three NIU students face civil lawsuits, filed Sept. 4 and Oct. 2, as reported by the Northern Star on Monday.

Twenty-eight pre-litigation letters were sent to NIU students on Feb. 28, and an additional 50 were sent May 2.

NIU was one of 19 schools issued letters in the RIAA’s latest attempt at stemming illegal file-sharing.
