SA allots money to Roller Hockey Club; discusses studying abroad program

An NIU student organization received $4,250 less in supplemental funding than it originally had requested as a result of Sunday’s Student Association Senate meeting.

The senate approved $750 in supplemental funding to the NIU Roller Hockey Club. The original allocation to the group was $5,000, but was reduced by the finance committee.

Speaker Robert Batey said the club was barely able to function last year due to budget problems and confusion.

“We felt that $750 was the appropriate amount to allocate them, considering the equipment they needed and the amount of funding we had,” Batey said.

Also at the meeting, student trustee Shaun Crisler discussed forming a committee to get more NIU students studying abroad.

“One of the things we wanted to do, and are looking to do this year, is working with students to get a closer look at our study abroad initiative,” Crisler said.

Goals of the committee include locating additional funds for study abroad students, identifying obstacles that prevent students from going abroad and creating initiatives to allow international students and study abroad students to share experiences, Crisler said.

NIU sends 4 percent of its undergraduates abroad, while Western Michigan University sends about 11 percent, Crisler said, citing figures from the 2005-06 academic year.

In other business, three senators changed committees at the meeting. Sen. Paul Bradley was moved from public affairs to finance, Sen. Jaclyn Curtis from campus life and Greek affairs to university services and Sen. Joseph Lee from mass transit to public affairs.
