70s theme party will feature local DJ

The Black Interhall Council will be hosting a blast from the past—a 1970s theme party with DJ Marcus Chapman.

Coinciding with Halloween weekend, the party has much competition, but is expected to draw a crowd with Chapman in the house.

The party will be Friday night in the Regency Room of the Holmes Student Center and will feature music from artists like Earth, Wind and Fire, The Ohio Players, Parliament, Rick James, Cameo and the Isley Brothers.

“There is a lot more to (being a DJ) than just playing some good songs. You’ve got to make it flow. I use funk and rhythm and blues in different patterns,” said Chapman, a senior communications major.

Chapman not only plays 70s music, but esearches it as well. He attributes this research to his ability to maintain a better sound.

“I know a lot about this kind of music but I don’t know it all. People that think they do, don’t know anything. That is why I continue to do the research that I do,” he said.

Chapman has looked at every issue of Jet magazine from 1973 to 1984. He looks at the charts to see exactly which songs and albums were making the top 10. He also has looked at all the Billboard charts from 1972 to 1984 to see what songs made the top 50.

“I can see which songs and albums were number one. By researching, I get the feeling that I am there,” he said.

“I have gotten pretty well known on campus for this type of music. I have a large record collection. The more you know about the music, the more you can do with it,” he added.

Chapman has been collecting music since he was a child. The first record he got was when he was five-years-old.

“I’ve always had a fascination for records ever since I was little. I thought, I might get lucky and they might give (the record) to me,” Chapman said.

Chapman first started to DJ at home for his family. He is thankful for the opportunity to DJ at the Black Interhall Council party for the exposure this event will give him. Chapman also is a DJ for WKDI.

“The first time I (was a DJ) for my family, it was horrible. Through experience, it has gotten a lot easier to work with a crowd,” Chapman said.

Aside from music, games and prizes will be awarded at the party. There will be a “Soul Train Scramble” and prizes awarded for best-dressed male and female.

Another incentive to dress 70s for the party is a dollar discount off the admission price.

“If you dress in 70s costume, you get a dollar off. A lot of our parties are up-tempo with a driving beat. This party will have a more mellow, relaxed atmosphere. You can party like they did in the old days,” said Tamika Corpus, vice president of Black Interhall Council.
