Smoking ban debate rages on
September 17, 2007
Students in residence halls dispute the limitation of smoking on campus.
According to the NIU smoking policy, smoking is banned in all buildings, including the residence halls.
Smoking is allowed outdoors and in designated smoking areas adjacent to buildings on campus. Although regulations have been established around campus, some students are not satisfied with how NIU is managing the dispute between smokers and nonsmokers.
“The are a lot of other places to smoke other than on campus and in front of the residence halls,” said Mefi Hermawanti, a first-year doctorate political science student.
Some students have a different perspective.
“I’m not really an anti-smoker; I just hold my breath as I walk by the smokers,” said Stephanie Maloney, a senior English education major.
Maloney said she has a parent that smokes but decided it wasn’t for her.
“As long as smoking is not inside the dorms, I don’t see a problem with it,” Maloney said.
Sophomore photography major Randi Stella, who smokes, said she believes nonsmokers get too many privileges.
“You can’t put laws on the outdoors,” Stella said. “Rules on campus are good right now, but I don’t think the campus banning is necessary.”
Stella said the status quo is acceptable.
“Smokers already can’t smoke directly in front of the dorms, which is a real pain, so there should be no other limits to smoking,” Stella said.
