Although the NIU men’s soccer team hasn’t gotten off to the start it hoped for, head coach Steve Simmons has tried to take something positive away from every match.

And though the Huskies suffered their worst loss of the young season Wednesday night – a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Wisconsin – Simmons was still able to find positives.

“It is a bit of a flattering result,” Simmons said. “We had our chances. At the end of the day, we didn’t make plays and Wisconsin did. But I was very proud of how our guys battled throughout. They stayed positive.”

The Huskies (2-4-3) gave up three first half goals to the Badgers and were just unable to mount a comeback. The first goal the Huskies gave up was basically an own goal, according to Simmons.

“Wisconsin made the most of their chances,” he said.

The Badgers beat the Huskies for the first time since 2003. NIU had two quality scoring chances in the first half with shots on goal from Marcus McCarty and Fraser Gibson, but the Huskies came away empty both times.

Simmons remains confident that his team will get things straightened out.

“We’ll take the lessons from it and move on,” he said. “We have to go on the road one more time and play a good Drake team. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
