Seminar aims for female financial independence

Women interested in improving their financial skills may find use in an upcoming program.

“Wise-Up – Financial Planning for Gen X Women” is an eight week seminar running every Monday until Oct. 29.

The seminar, which meets in the Women’s Resource Center conference room, is designed to help women in thinking about their long-term financial situation.

The seminar is aimed at the women of “Generation X,” which includes people born between 1961 and 1981.

Jill Dunlap, director of the Women’s Resource Center, is presenting the seminar. It is important for women to be educated about their finances, she said.

“I think it’s important because women don’t get taught from their families about planning for financial futures,” Dunlap said.

It is crucial for women to be knowledgeable when it comes to financial information so they can be self sufficient, she said.

“It’s important women know this on their own, instead of having people do it for them,” Dunlap said.

The primary goal of the seminar is to help women gain knowledge, skills and confidence they need to move their financial lives forward, Dunlap said.

There are eight sections to the seminar, covering topics from “money math” to “insurance and risk management.”
