There’s something for every student at Expo

Students interested in becoming more involved at NIU have hundreds of options to explore at the Student Association’s Organizational Expo in Central Park, Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Over 200 student organizations will be on hand for the event.

“A lot of students complain that there is nothing to do at Northern,” said Alex Thervil, director of organizational development for the Student Association. “The Expo will help students to maximize their college experience.”

The event features a live DJ and free food samples from a variety of vendors. There will also be a “Best Pizza in DeKalb” contest, as well as nine-hole miniature golf.

“Our main targets for the Expo are freshmen, transfer students and commuters,” said SA President Jarvis Purnell. “Commuters will be able to network with student groups, while freshmen and transfers will be able to step out of their shell and connect with other students.”

Greek, cultural, academic, religious and athletic organizations will be on hand to promote their groups and answer student questions.

“The floods set back freshmen who are interested in getting involved and meeting new people. Even if students choose not to join an organization, they still have the opportunity to mingle,” Thervil said.

Over 3,000 students are expected to attend the Expo, Thervil said.

“I would measure the success of the expo by how many students show up, and I would know that by how much food has been eaten,” he said.
