The DeKalb Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred Tuesday morning which involved two NIU students.

The two victims were walking eastbound on the south side of the 900 block of West Hillcrest Drive at about 1:43 a.m. The suspects reportedly approached the victims and asked if they had any cigarettes.

The first suspect then allegedly attacked one of the victims without warning, knocking him to the ground. The first suspect went through one of victim’s pockets while the second suspect displayed a knife and demanded the other victim’s property, from whom money and a cell phone were taken, police say. Neither of the victims suffered serious injuries.

Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department said it was “possible, but too early to tell” if this incident was connected to other robberies in the area, and DeKalb police won’t know until the suspects are caught.

The first suspect, who reportedly knocked the victim to the ground, is described as a black male, 6-foot-4 inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a black puffy coat, a black baseball cap worn backwards and blue jeans.

The second suspect, who police said displayed the knife, is described as a black male, 5-foot-10 inches tall and about 170 pounds. He was wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
