The InterVarsity Christian Fellowship will host a number of events for Homecoming week.

The fellowship will host a 5K run Saturday, Oct. 13., prior to the NIU/Western Michigan football game. The run begins at Hopkins Park at 8 a.m. and ends in the same location. Registration, which runs until Oct. 10, is $20.

All proceeds go to benefit Homeless Children International-Kenya, an organization the NIU fellowship has partnered with for the past four years.

Casey Beckley, adviser of InterVarsity, said he hopes for 100 to 150 runners to participate.

This July, 10 students in the fellowship traveled to Kenya.

“It was part of seeing the needs and what was happening in Africa, and get a firsthand look at what was going on,” Beckley said.

The goal of going to Kenya was to give students a new perspective on the world outside America.

“This last year was to expose students to life outside of the United Sates,” Beckley said. “There is a misconception about the needs in Africa, and sometimes we grow desensitized to what is going on.”

The fellowship is planning on visiting Kenya again this coming summer, but nothing is certain, he said.

On Tuesday, the fellowship will partner with the Residence Hall Association to host the “Broken Breadmeal” in the dining halls. The meal is a bland porridge and is meant to “give students a tangible experience of what people in Africa experience everyday,” Beckley said.

The fellowship will be looking for about 850 students to wear orange in support of people orphaned by HIV/AIDS on Thursday, Beckley said.

The fellowship will sell orange wristbands that day for students who wish to show support. That night Chris Yuan, a seminary professor, will speak to students about his experience with HIV.
