DeKALB | From toilet humor to political correctness, Larry the Cable Guy told DeKalb about it on Thursday in front of a more-than-half-full Convocation Center crowd.
Throughout the 90-minute set, Larry was able to captivate the audience with his unique sense of humor His set started off with a jab at the Convo itself.
“I want to thank the NIU Convocation Center for busting a** on the decorations,” he said as the stage only had a stool and a stand for his guitar. “They could have at least put a fake tree, you know, in case I have to go to the bathroom.”
Kevin Selover, assistant director of marketing for the Convo, knew the show would be a hit.
“We had him a couple of years go and the response was awesome,” Selover said. “The promoter for the act actually brought the show to us.”
With his southern-flavored humor, Larry did not disappoint those in attendance.
“It is the end of the year and we needed something funny,” said NIU junior health education major Danielle Turner, “and Larry is funny.”
His catchphrase, “Git-R-Done” was uttered only ten times throughout the show, but Larry placed them perfectly as the crowd roared after each one.
“Git-R-Done,” he said at the start of the show. “What were the odds I’d say that?” he asked.
Larry didn’t look back from the first joke, hitting issues that are troubling America today.
Topics such as gay marriage and gas prices (“My brother sold his car for gas money”) were covered during the course of the night. He made it a point to emphasize the fact that everyone should be open minded when it comes to jokes regarding hot topics.
Leaving the show, the expressions on many fans’ faces spoke more than words.
“It was way over the top,” said Rockford-Guilford high school teacher Doug Cameron. “Larry’s not afraid to have fun – we need to have more fun in America.”
Another Rockford resident who made the trip was 66-year-old Bev Towle. She loved what she heard on a local radio station enough to travel to DeKalb.
“My grandson also said that we would like the humor,” she said. “I’m willing to try anything once.”
Toward the end of the show, Larry picked up a guitar and started to “sing” a few of his jokes, which set the crowd into a frenzy of laughter.
Larry finished off the night by playing a trailer for his upcoming film “Delta Farce” which stars him alongside Bill Engvall and DJ Qualls. The trailer garnered a huge reaction from the DeKalb faithful.
Reno Collier opened the show as part of the “Right To Bear Arms Tour,” which has hit various U.S. locations throughout the spring. Collier’s comedy struck a chord with many in attendance as laughter was present throughout.
