DeKALB | In its final scheduled meeting of the spring semester Sunday night, the Student Association Senate approved the fiscal year 2008 SA budget. During the discussion, no dissenting opinions were voiced.
“I think [the budget] represents the best appropriation with the limited amounts of resources we have. I would encourage all of you to vote in favor as is,” said Robert Batey, speaker of the Senate.
Senator Josh Alvarado, a member of the SA public affairs committee, asked if $10,000 earmarked in FY2007 for “The Voice,” an SA publication and later Web-based magazine which ceased production in May 2006, could be used in fall of 2007 to create a new SA newsletter. Jarvis Purnell, SA treasurer and president-elect, said Alvarado could budget for a newsletter in the fall.
Student organizations must be recognized for one year to gain up to $400 funding, Purnell said. The group may ask for as much funding as it wishes after two years and by providing evidence the group will continue to exist in the future. The amount of funding may be unlimited, but must be justified by the group to the SA finance committee, Purnell said.
Some groups in FY2008 lost funding due to several reasons, including “extremely late” applications for funding, with Colleges Against Cancer being among them, Purnell said.
Mary Lee Cozad, CAC adviser, confirmed that the group turned its application in after the specified deadline. CAC’s budget was reduced from $400 in FY2007 to zero dollars for FY2008, according to the budget released to SA senators.
