Sandwich to get ‘everything the Dells have’ in new waterpark

DeKALB | Construction of an indoor water park will begin in May just 30 miles south of DeKalb.

The park, called Waves of Fun, will be located in Sandwich and is set to open Dec. 19.

Brad Inman of Sandwich is funding the project with his wife, Julie, and their friends Dave and Meredith Avery.

The park is estimated to cost between $10 and $15 million to build. Although the exact cost of admission has not yet been determined, Inman said fees will be reasonable.

The Averys said they were toying with the idea of a water park in the area when Brad suggested Sandwich as a good location.

“We are looking to make Sandwich a destination,” Inman said. “Not just a stop along Route 34.”

Inman has worked with water park equipment for 17 years. He and his wife own IPS, a water slide resurfacing company.

“We hope to attract all age groups,” Inman said. “There will be a little something for everyone.”

The first phase of the park will include four water slides and body and tube slides in a 60,000 square-foot space. A wave pool with a 200- to 250-person capacity and a lazy river will also be available.

There will also be a play area for children. An interactive water park, a basketball island, volleyball net, dumping bucket and arcade will be included. Other amenities include a concession stand and tiki bar to go along with the Key West theme.

“It’d be cool to have to have a drink with your friends and swim at the same time,” said Aaron Guerrasio, a senior corporate communication major. “It’s like a cheap vacation for college students.”

Inman believes the highlight of the venture is the “Flow Rider,” a ride that provides a current of water strong enough to surf and boogie board on.

“The Flow Rider will be the first offered anywhere in the state of Illinois,” Inman said.

By summer of 2008, construction of a second phase of the water park will begin. Another indoor addition and an outdoor park will be added as well. Once finished, the outdoor park will be open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

“We’ll have everything the Dells have, but much closer,” Inman said.

The water park will be built two blocks east of an up-scale hotel which is already being constructed. Ralph Webb, another local businessman, is funding the construction of the hotel, which will be called Timber Creek Lodge.

Guests who stay at Timber Creek Lodge may have admission to the water park included in their room fees. A shuttle from the park to the hotel will be available. However, staying in the hotel is not necessary to access the water park, Inman said.
