Left with a bad taste

TOLEDO, Ohio | After looking for some consistency all season, the NIU softball team may have finally found it. Unfortunately it probably isn’t what it had in mind.
The Huskies (21-26, 10-12) ended their season losing seven of their last 10 games including dropping three of four on the road this weekend.
A double-header against Bowling Green (30-9, 13-5) on Friday started things off ominously for NIU as the Falcons needed just five innings to beat NIU 10-0 in the first game and waited until the seventh inning to break the Huskies’ heart in the second game.
NIU jumped to an early 2-0 lead through four innings thanks to run scoring singles by Krista McPherson and Michelle Nendza.
Bowling Green pulled within one in the bottom of the fourth and the lead remained until the seventh.
With two outs and runner on first, Falcon senior Jeanine Baca hit a walk-off home run ending the game.
“We had opportunities to put up crooked numbers and we didn’t get it done,” NIU coach Donna Martin said. “It was just one bad pitch in the bottom of the seventh.”
The Huskies came back against Toledo (10-32, 5-15) on Saturday and shut them out winning 3-0. NIU was very efficient that game, scoring the three runs on just two hits.
NIU drew seven walks that game, including one to McPherson with the bases loaded, bringing in the Huskies first run of the game in the fifth inning.
“We had a good day,” Martin said. “We were on base a lot because we either walked or got hit.”
Toledo, however, would repay the favor on Sunday, shutting out NIU 3-0. NIU had plenty of opportunities as it stranded 11 base runners in the game.
