NIU students want beer to be one thing: cheap
May 1, 2007
DeKALB | Quality is sometimes comprised for quantity as students head to the liquor store. Many local store owners say beer sales have increased, due to the warm weather.
Christe Saliscury, manager of American Liquors, says sales heavily depend on the weather.
“When it’s cold most people prefer liquor, when it’s warmer it’s beer weather,” she said.
However, Saliscury says, weather is not the only factor that determines beer sales.
“People are very money oriented, whatever’s on sale sells,” said Saliscury.
She says the highest selling beers are Bud Light, Miller Lite and Pabst Blue Ribbon, but when a certain beer is on sale that changes.
On an average weekend American Liquors tends to sell anywhere from 100-200 cases of the highest selling beer, and usually these are in cans, not bottles.
Vicki Dirksen, the assistant store director at Jewel-Osco, says they sell Miller Lite more than any other beer. The grocery store’s location is a major factor affecting beer sales because of its location near a residential community.
The manager of the Bottle Store, Brian Haberer, says Busch Light is the most popular beer they sell.
Haberer said the store generally profits significantly after an average weekend.
“We sell a lot of cases,” he said.
Juan Garcia, a junior manufacturing engineering major said he usually prefers to buy Busch Light.
“It’s cheap and it comes in a 30 pack,” said Garcia.
Each 12 oz. can holds 95 calories and .7 grams of protein according to Anheuser-Busch’s Web site; a number which is very low when compared with the majority of beers listed on the web site. Although, it may not be the classiest beer, sometimes 30 cans for $10.99 is just too good to pass up.
Answers varied among students but cost was an issue for all of them.
Brian Katzenbach, a junior communications major enjoys drinking Fat Tire.
“[I like Fat Tire because] it tastes better than any other domestic beer and they have $3 pints at Molly’s everyday,” said Katzenbach.
Junior English major Emily Baehr prefers Natural Light beer.
Baehr says she enjoys it because it was the first beer she learned to drink with.
“There’s a fond place for it in my cooler,” said Baehr.
