Hall repairs to start next fall
April 6, 2007
The Residence Hall Association’s hall improvement budget isn’t used for all repairs in the residence halls and there are many different hall improvement projects on the list.
The RHA’s hall improvement budget totals $18,870. The money for the budget originates from a partnership with Pepsi, said Justin Rickman, the administrative vice president of RHA.
The budget stood originally for the 2006-07 academic year at $19,000, prior to $130 being used to purchase “Robert’s Rules of Order” books for the residence halls. Repairs are in the process of getting started, as RHA is using the results of a survey administered to students in an effort to determine which improvements were most significant.
Repairs are expected to begin next fall at the earliest.
Jorge Rodas, a freshman communication major, believes more hall improvements should have been made during the academic year.
“There are too many improvements that need to be made for the RHA to just hang on to the money and not use it,” Rodas said. “If they have the funds now, why not just use it?”
RHA’s hall improvement budgets do not take care of all hall improvements or repairs. Rather, the budgets are ideally used more for the beautification of the residence halls, Rickman said.
“We don’t take care of critical repairs, such as a piece of tile falling on someone’s head. If something like that happened, they should contact the work request line directly,” Rickman said. Rickman defined “critical repairs” as safety issues, equipment malfunction and broken elevators. Housing and Dining is responsible for fixing these, he said.
If students have ideas for improving residence halls, Rickman encourages them to attend hall council meetings Tuesdays at 9 p.m. in the residence halls, or to attend RHA’s General Assembly at 4:30 p.m. Sundays in the Stevenson South smart classroom.
