Making the MAC rounds

After jumping out to a 3-1 MAC record last weekend at home, the NIU women’s softball team looks to continue its success on the road this weekend.

The Huskies (13-14, 3-1) travel to Oxford, Ohio to face Miami (12-25-1, 2-2) this afternoon in a double header with the first pitch coming at noon.

Saturday and Sunday, NIU goes to Muncie, Ind. to square off against Ball State (11-20, 2-2).

“When you go on the road, you have to get as many wins as you can,” said coach Donna Martin. “We’re hoping to come back with a 3-1 record, but 4-0 would be nice too.”

Despite Miami’s poor record, 14 of its losses have been decided by two runs or fewer.

The Redhawks also have a young pitching staff with three freshmen and a sophomore, making them relatively unknown to NIU.

“They have some good pitching and their best pitcher is a freshman,” Martin said. “We haven’t faced them yet, so it’s tough to know what to expect.”

To complement the young pitchers, Miami’s best hitter is senior Leslie Macedo, hitting .316 with 19 RBI and three home runs on the season.

NIU has seen Ball State already this season in a tournament in Iowa and won 6-4.

Junior Michelle Nendza came up big in that game with two hits and a pair of RBIs.

“Right now, we need to work toward consistency,” Martin said. “We’ve had a lot of players up and down and we need to get solid hitting all over the lineup.”

Krista McPherson has been the Huskies most consistent offensive threat this season. The junior infielder is hitting .333 and leads the team with 16 runs scored.
