Victor eRecruiting valuable tool for departing seniors

DeKALB | As graduation looms 23 days away, seniors are preparing to take the next step.

What career to pursue is a common dilemma among all students, said Dave Klepitsch, acting associate director of campus and employer relations for Career Services.

“We help connect students with opportunities that relate to what they want to do,” Klepitsch said.

Klepitsch said NIU career services acts as a bridge from the student’s major experience to their employers. Career Services works to refine and develop skills for finding and getting a job, including resume writing and interviewing.

Career services uses software called Victor eRecruiting, which acts as a job-finding database, listing more than 3,000 employers. The software allows students to upload and send resumes, and is available on the Career Services Web site.

“Often, when people study for four years to get a degree, they don’t know what to do with it,” Klepitsch said.

Career Services allows students the opportunity to talk to people in the field they are considering, and to provide experience in their proposed field of interest.

“If you take control and have direction, anxiety drops,” Klepitsch said.

Robert Zimny, a senior art major, said he is looking forward to graduating, but is unsure on the specifics of his future.

“It isn’t easy to find a job all the time, and I haven’t started looking,” Zimny said. “That’s probably where the anxiety comes from.”

Jessica Montana, a senior nutrition and dietetics major graduating in May, said she is trying to “go with the flow” after graduating.

“Over the summer, I’m going to start figuring out where I want to work,” Montana said.
