Marketing stunt confuses resident hall students

DeKALB | A promotional stunt in the residence halls has left more than a few students confused.
Network Direct, a travel services company, recently sent postcard-sized pickup notices to students living in the residence halls. However, the pickup notices were simply a marketing strategy to promote Network Direct.
The hoax left some students wondering what was going on.
“It’s really misleading,” said Erik Meyer, a freshmen nutrition, dietetics, and hospitality administration major. Freshman undecided major Jason Karpiak said that he felt the notice was misleading and confusing.
Some students initially believed they were receiving something because of the design of the notice.
“When I saw it, I thought I had a package,” said senior meteorology major Andre Euboma.. “I knew I didn’t order anything, so I thought it was weird.”
The back of the card had a number students were encouraged to call within 24 hours of receiving the notice.
According to Sandra, a Network Direct receptionist who refused to provide her last name, there were no packages sent to the residence halls on campus. She refused to comment on the legality of the promotion.
The notices were intended to attract college juniors, seniors and graduate students to call and meet with Network Direct in order to hear about student discounts and travel options.
Freshmen and sophomores were not qualified for the student travel discounts and were encouraged by the company to disregard them.
