Jerusalem Post reporter to speak on media’s portrayal of Israel

DeKALB | Herb Keinon, diplomatic correspondent for Jerusalem Post, will speak on Israel’s media portrayal at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Barsema Hall Auditorium.

Keinon has worked for the Jerusalem Post for 20 years and specializes in reporting on the current confrontation and diplomatic attempts to resolve current conflicts in Israel, according to the Jewish National Fund.

Keinon’s speech is titled, “Israel and the Press: Why it is So Difficult for Israel to Get a Fair Shake in the Media.”

Keinon will speak about the influences that impact how the media determines what information is presented, said Bill Cassidy, assistant professor of communication.

Cassidy thinks many people don’t consider what actually influences what the news does and doesn’t cover, and attending the speech would be beneficial to students to learn why.

“The news doesn’t just come out of a vacuum,” Cassidy said. “There are many levels of things that influence what we see, hear and read.”

The event, which will be held on Israel Independence Day, is being organized by the NIU Hillel and Jewish Community Relations Council, said Cary Wolovick, a senior history education major, who is in charge of advertising the event.

Keinon will fly from Israel to DeKalb to give the speech, which is expected to last an hour, Wolovick said.

Often featured as a guest commentator on television and radio programs across the globe, Keinon also lectures across Israel and the U.S. about the situation in Israel, according to the Jewish National Fund.
