Getting a handle on enrollment
March 29, 2007
DeKALB | Clarification about the Ad Hoc Enrollment Committee was a focal point at Wednesday’s Faculty Senate meeting.
The committee is a group of individuals from Enrollment Services, Admissions, Registration and Records and Financial Aid, who report to the vice provost concerning enrollment numbers at NIU, said Vice Provost Earl Seaver.
“It’s a very active committee this time of year, because we’re trying to get a handle on how we are doing on our admissions,” Seaver said.
The committee meets once a month to track how the enrollment numbers are relating to things such as available room in residence halls and admittance into the honors program, Seaver said.
The committee does not make any changes to school policy; it only provides advice to alter parameters to make enrollment predictions more accurate.
For example, NIU was the last state school in Illinois to add an application fee, which was an action taken by NIU in response to the committee’s advice, Seaver said. The action was taken in response to an overload of students deciding to attend NIU very late, which caused incidents where students were only able to sign up for six credit hours, Seaver said.
“We literally were waiting in June, July and even in August, finding out if students were deciding if they were going to come [to NIU] or not,” Seaver said.
