Sweeping success
March 26, 2007
The NIU baseball team achieved many accomplishments in its three-game sweep of Ohio over the weekend.
The Huskies’ current five-game winning streak is the longest since March 25-30 of last year, which, coincidently, began with two wins over Ohio.
NIU has had 10 or more hits 12 times in 18 games this year. Plus, its 11-7 record is the best 18-game start since the 2004 campaign.
With Friday’s season-opening win, NIU is 5-0 in home openers under coach Ed Mathey.
Seeing aces
Junior Matt Jernstad earned his first career win in Sunday’s 7-2 victory over the Bobcats. Plus, sophomore Andy Deain has yet to allow an earned run in ten and two-thirds innings over eight appearances this year.
Trevor Feeney’s complete game on Friday was the first of his career and the first complete game by a Huskie pitcher since March 4 of last year, marking a span of 63 games.
Hitting their stride
Also in Sunday’s game, junior Danny Reed extended his hit streak to 14 games.
With Saturday’s extra-inning win, the Huskies have won three of their last four extra-inning games.
Jesse Seykora’s two-run home run during Saturday’s game was his seventh of the year in only 17 games. It took Seykora 52 games to hit six home runs last year. Seykora went hitless in Friday’s game, ending his hit streak at 12.
Freshman Dave Reynolds has six RBI on six hits in only 12 at bats this season.
Hot bat
NIU softball third baseman Michelle Nendza batted .500 in 12 trips to the plate as the Huskies went 2-2 during weekend action.
The Huskies are now 10-11 on the season and will be back in action Wednesday when they host Iowa.
