National championship in their sights

Pat Castillo is adding to his trophy case.
Last Sunday, Castillo won the 125-pound MAC Championship title, then earned the MAC Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler award later in the day.
Castillo, along with teammates Danny Burk, Duke Burk and Johnny Galloway will hope to hoist an NCAA tournament trophy next Saturday, March 17 at the NCAA tournament in Detroit, Mich. The Huskies will need to bring their A-game to the Palace of Auburn Hills in a tournament expected to have an audience of more than 15,000 people.
Wrestlers will be seeded one through 12, with all seeds following that to be drawn at random.
“If I’m seeded, I’m seeded,” said Castillo, whose last loss came on Dec. 30 during the second day of the Midlands tournament. “I’ll have to go in and wrestle the top guys anyway, so it doesn’t really matter to me.”
At least 30 wrestlers will be grappling against each other per weight class, with the final eight wrestlers receiving All-American honors.
NIU hasn’t had an All-American since 2004, when Ben Heizer finished second in the 184-pound class. NIU’s four qualifiers hope to change that come next weekend.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had four qualifiers,” NIU head coach Dave Grant said. “All things are possible at the NCAA’s.”
For redshirt freshman Duke Burk, next weekend could potentially be his first of four trips to the tournament. In his final attempt, senior and older brother Danny Burk has reached his goal of making the NCAA tournament and will look to do some damage in the tournament.
“Danny and Duke are always fired up to go, especially Danny,” assistant coach Mike Castillo said. “He’s pumped to finally be in the tournament.”
