House Cafe to host ‘Unique’ group of musicians Thursday
March 27, 2007
Chicago-based art-rockers Unique Chique will invade The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, Thursday.
The band lists Radiohead, Rainer Maria, U2, Hum and American Football as primary influences, but they also combine the best elements of groups like Sonic Youth, The Cure and Interpol as well as jazz legends like Miles Davis and alternative pioneers The Velvet Underground to create their own…well…”Unique” sound.
The quartet is led by singer/guitarist Joe Starita and features the ethereal guitar textures of Mike Sanfilipp, the melodic bass playing of Ernie Lohrer and the tight virtuoso drum work of Paul Szlachta. The band’s latest release is the dynamic, bittersweet “Ethica.”
“Our music is open-ended, and through that, I hope that it transcends peoples emotions,” Lohrer said in an interview for UR Chicago. “Like my favorites, like Brian Wilson, you can listen to these songs time and again over consecutive days, in a different mood each time. It would amplify however I felt at the time, and I hope that’s what people get from what we do.”
The band’s manager Curt Swank is one of their staunchest supporters.
“They’re an amazing live band and are probably one of the tightest bands in Chicago,” Swank said. “They’re mind-bogglingly talented. Each member is amazing. They have probably one of the best drummers (Szlachta) you will ever see live. He is amazingly technical and talented. I’ve seen them upward of 20 times and it always gives me chills.”
The show Thursday starts at 8 p.m. and costs $6 at the door. Also appearing are DeKalb natives Hungry Bear, Colossal frontman Pat Ford and pop experimentalists The Coma Collective.
